Staying Healthy At Home

With gyms, schools, and parks closed, it has become harder to stay active and healthy during the quarantine. Although many traditional physical activity methods are not available, there are still many ways to keep fit at home. Being stuck in the house without any consistent physical activity and a nutritional diet can significantly impact the overall quality of life and health.

Here are a few ways to remain healthy while being in quarantine:

Before doing any physical activity, be sure to consult with your doctor and understand your limitations.

If you are working from home at a desk, try to get up as often as possible. Sitting down for long periods of time decreases blood circulation and can lead to increased blood pressure. Try to stand or walk in place during your workday.

Here are a few other ways to get active at home:

Have a Dance Party

One of the easiest ways to break a sweat and have fun is to dance. This doesn’t require any equipment and can be done at your own pace. Before you begin, you can create a quick playlist of 20-30 mins of your favorite dance songs. You can do any dances you like that help get your heart rate up. The Department of Health and Human Services recommended at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity a week.

Yoga

This is a low-intensity form of exercise that can help tone and build muscles. It incorporates elements of meditation like mindful breathing and relaxation. There are many different free sources for yoga online for beginners to experts.

Set A Timer

It can be easy to forget to exercise, don’t leave it up to chance! Set an alarm for your physical activity. If you don’t have a lot of options for working out, you can do a few simple activities that don’t require a lot of space.

  • Jumping jacks
  • Jump rope
  • Jog in place
  • Sit-Ups
  • Planks
  • Squats

In addition to getting adequate exercise, it is just as important to include a balanced diet and healthy eating habits.

Here are a few tips for maintaining a healthy diet:

Stick to A Routine

Although it can be difficult to keep up a routine while being stuck at home, it is important to keep a sense of normalcy. If you usually woke up at a certain time, continue to wake up at the same time and try to mimic the regular routine you are used to.

Balanced Diet

While snacking is inevitable, try to be consistent with the meals you eat. If you can, try to eat fresh fruits and vegetables and incorporate them into your daily meals.

Stay Hydrated

It is recommended to drink at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day. Try to reach this goal daily. A great way to stick to this goal is to start drinking water as soon as you wake up and replenish your glass when it is empty.

Avoid Overindulgence

Am I bored or just hungry? If you have to ask yourself this question, chances are you don’t really need to eat. Since there is not much to do outside of our homes, it can be easy to fall into a cycle of overeating. A great way to avoid this is to stay hydrated. Sometimes when our bodies show signs of hunger, it is actually dehydration. Be sure to drink plenty of water, and if you are still hungry, follow-up with a light snack.

We hope these tips help make your time spent at home easier and encourages you to get active and stay fit during these times.
