Walking Safely As a Senior

We have talked about how good it is for senior citizens to walk as a form of exercise, but it’s also important for seniors to do so safely.

If you are going to make walking a habit, it is important that you walk safely and understand how to do so.

Talk to your Primary Doctor

Before you start exercising on a regular basis, it’s important to make sure you are healt

hy enough to do so. Check with your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough to start walking regularly and ask if they have suggestions to help get you started.

Understand Your Limits

Although walking might seem like a simple exercise, it is still exercise all the same. It is important to understand that you still need to gradually get used to walking. If you start feeling tired, make sure to take a break and recognize that you’ve reached your limit.

Dress Your Best

Before you start walking, make sure that you have appropriate clothing in order to do so. If it’s hot outside, make sure you wear cooler clothing. If it’s cold outside, make sure you wear warmer clothing. Purchase reliable sneakers that will help keep you steady and wear flexible clothing that isn’t too restrictive.

Remain Hydrated

If you are planning on walking around the block or around several, you should have water on hand. You should drink plenty of water before heading out, and you should keep drinking during and following your walk as well. Water will help keep you hydrated, preventing sore muscles, dizziness, and high temperatures.
