Help Your Senior Loved One Complete Their Holiday Shopping

Many senior citizens are unable to do their holiday shopping independently if they are no longer driving. For other senior citizens, the thought of going out and doing it alone is just too stressful. During the holiday season, many seniors want to go out and shop for their loved ones but find it very difficult. Here are some suggestions on how to help your senior loved one complete their holiday shopping.

Find the Best Hours

Many people go shopping after work and stores become increasingly busy around dinner time. Crowded stores make it difficult for seniors to browse. Stores are especially packed on weekends, making them hard to get through, especially with a wheelchair or walker. If possible, take your loved one shopping during stores “off-hours.” If you can take the day off, go shopping during the afternoon when most people are at work or school. If you have to go in the evening hours, try to go towards the beginning of the week. Wednesday and Thursday will be much busier than Monday and Tuesday because they are closer to the weekend. If stores are not too crowded, your senior will find it easier to search.

Plan Gifts Ahead of Time

Many seniors struggle with mild to severe memory loss. When seniors are out at a busy store, they are likely not going to recall who they want to buy for or what they want to buy. Before you go shopping, help your senior make a list of who they want to buy for and what they want to buy for that person as well. This will also help you plan what stores you’ll need to go to. List an “ideal” gift for each person along with a few alternatives in case you can’t find the first option. This will help cut down on time and stress for both you and you and your loved one.

Take Your Time

Seniors typically move a little slower than we do. Although some seniors can easily keep up with the best of us, the majority of seniors struggle to get around quickly. Make sure you give yourself and your senior a significant amount of time. You do not want to rush your loved one through the stores. Give them the time they need, want, and deserve. Your loved one will enjoy having the time to look around and browse, especially if they don’t get out often.

Seniors will appreciate getting the time and assistance of a loved one to complete their holiday shopping. For many of them, it would be impossible to complete alone. If you are a caregiver for a senior loved one seeking advice, visit our blog.
