Safe Gardening Tips for Seniors

Did you know that April is National Garden Month? Gardening is a hobby that seniors can enjoy well into their golden years. It’s inexpensive, relaxing and provides a healthy way for seniors to be outdoors and get some very gentle exercise. There’s something deeply satisfying about planting seeds in the ground and watching flowers and vegetables grow! It’s important, however, to keep in mind some essential safety tips.

Do a safety check of the yard

Seniors should enlist the help of a friend or loved one to walk around the yard and check for safety hazards. Keep an eye out for protruding roots, loose steps, rocks and uneven ground. If you spot any dangers, fix them right away.

Dress appropriately

Seniors should wear long pants and sleeves to protect themselves from scratches, as well as googles to protect their eyes from snapping branches.

Stay connected

Always carry a cell phone outside with you so you can call for help if needed.

Avoid ladders

While ladders may have been no problem earlier in life, seniors are especially at risk for falls, and should enlist younger friends or family members for any projects involving a climb.

Raise the garden to avoid bending

Bending is bad for stiff senior backs. Try raised beds or vertical gardening to enjoy your favorite hobby without hurting your back.
