What is incontinence?

Incontinence is a loss of bladder or bowel control, although once thought to be a disease, incontinence is truly a symptom that can be caused by a broad range of conditions.  Some of the most common conditions leading to incontinence are birth defects, pelvic surgery, injuries to the pelvic region or to the spinal cord, neurological diseases, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, poliomyelitis, infection, and degenerative changes associated with aging. It can also occur as a result of pregnancy or childbirth.  Normally, the bladder stores the urine that is continually produced by the kidneys until it is convenient to urinate, but when any part of the urinary system malfunctions, incontinence can result.  Incontinence can be caused by everyday habits, underlying medical conditions or physical problems. A thorough evaluation by your doctor can help determine what’s behind your incontinence.
