So the year has gone bye, wow 2012 was full of many surprises!  This coming year 2013 has its new set of challenges.  One of the greatest challenges that many people face is the challenge of mobility, over the next few weeks we will be doing a series on Tips for Daily Living entitled, “I Like to Move it –Move it” Last week we covered three different types of walkers, and their proper sizing and use.  This week we will be covering two different types of Wheelchairs, the Standard Wheel Chair and the Transport Wheelchair…

Although there are many different types of wheelchairs available ranging from Heavy Duty to extra Narrow and even Antimicrobial coated chairs most chairs will fit into either a standard or transport chair.

Standard Wheelchairs:  A standard wheelchair is a basic chair that is typically available in 16”, 18” or 20”.  A standard chair is propelled by the patient and will typically include either standard or elevating footrests.  Many chairs will also have the option of either a standard armrest or a desk armrest, which makes tasks such as sitting at a table or desk much easier.  In some instances standard chair may also contain “drop-arms” these are designed to assist a customer in getting in and out of a wheelchair.

Transport Chair:  A transport chair is used simply as stated, to transport a patient.  Transport chairs will contain four small wheels and are not intended to be patient propelled They are slightly smaller in design and are typically available in 17” & 19” weight capacity for these chair is typically 250-300lbs.  Transport chairs provide a great solution for traveling as they are more compact and weigh only a fraction of a standard chair. 

Wheelchairs today are fully customizable in every sense, so if you are looking for a thrill ride in a sports chair, or looking for an easy lightweight way to take a loved one to the doctor there are many options available.  It is important to note that standard upholstery on wheelchairs called “sling”  is not intended for extended periods of time, a chair cushion and back cushion should always be used for optimal comfort and protection.
