Sandal Safety

Summer is almost here, which means it’s time to break out the sandals! While summer footwear provides relief from the heat, it is important to choose a safe and comfortable style.

Flip flops are a favorite summer footwear style, but they are not the safest option for individuals of any age, especially seniors. Some of the biggest causes of foot and ankle pain or injury are poor footwear, lack of arch support and lack of stability. The least supportive sandal choice is one of the most popular styles: The flip flop.

Plantar fasciitis is common and painful foot condition caused by the inflammation of tissue connecting the heel to the toes. Flip flops can increase the chances of, or inflame, this condition because of their lack of proper cushion and support for the foot and ankle. Also, the lack of stability they provide can lead to stubbed or broken toes, falls, sprains and other painful accidents. As we age, our basic stability and capability to manage walking on uneven ground decreases, leading to a greater chance of injury while wearing unsupportive shoes.

Sandals that enclose the foot and offer proper arch support are a much safer and more comfortable choice for the summer months. Look for a style that straps across the back of the heel and has soles that extend beyond your toes.

If you have a weak or injured ankle, be especially sure to wear an ankle brace or wrap with your sandals. Visit BEK Medical to find the right option for you!
