March is National Nutrition Month!

March is finally here, which means that spring is just around the corner and it is time to celebrate our health with National Nutrition Month! An annual campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, National Nutrition Month is all about the importance of eating right and staying physically active. This year’s theme is “Savor the Flavor of Eating Right,” which reminds us that that just because something is healthy, doesn’t mean it can’t be delicious!

National Nutrition Month has been around since 1980, and was celebrated for almost ten years beforehand as National Nutrition Week.

Healthy eating is important for individuals of all ages, and here at BEK Medical we would like to focus our healthy eating tips toward the senior population. Maintaining a balanced diet can help to increase your energy levels while reducing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes as well as assisting in the management of any chronic diseases you are already battling.

Increase Your Calcium Intake

As we age, our bones become more brittle, making potential falls and injuries more dangerous. Incorporating more calcium into your diet can help to maintain your bone health, which is why 1,200 mg of calcium a day is recommended for seniors. Dairy products like milk, cheese and yogurt are great sources of calcium, as are broccoli, kale and almonds.

Reduce Inflammation

If you are looking for a way to reduce joint pain and inflammation, eating a healthy and diverse diet can provide some relief. Berries and fatty fish are two foods that can help to reduce inflammation, as are healthy fats like omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Whole grains, leafy green veggies, berries and plant-based sources of protein are all components of an inflammation reducing diet. For more information, check out this article from eatright.org.

Get Active

Along with improving your dietary choices, physical activity plays a huge component in staying healthy. Whether you take your dog for a walk around the neighborhood, join a yoga class at your local fitness center or play in the backyard with your grandchildren, incorporation at least 30 minutes of physical activity into your day will go a long way to maintain your health.
