Facebook Etiquette Tips for Seniors

Facebook is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family members, particularly if you have loved ones who live far away. If you have grandkids, however, you’ve probably heard stories about Facebook friends (ahem, Aunt Martha) who comment excessively or accidentally shout by typing in all caps.

Avoid making a Facebook faux pas by following these etiquette tips for seniors:

Watch what you share

Keep in mind that Facebook is public. Don’t type anything on your wall or a friend’s that you (or they) wouldn’t want other people to read. You may love your grandkids, but gushing over them on their Facebook walls might embarrass them! Also, make sure not to post any personal information like your credit card or Social Security numbers, to avoid becoming a target for thieves.

Be polite

Did you know that typing in all caps technically means you’re shouting? Leave the caps lock button off when you type.

Stick to who you know

You may see other people interacting with your friends on Facebook, but avoid “friending” them unless you know them in real life. Also, don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know, as they may be scammers.

Watch what you “like”

It’s considered poor etiquette to “like” or comment on every single one of your friend’s posts—especially if the friend in question is a child or grandchild. Limit your likes to major updates, like profile photos or life events.
