Backyard Party Setup Tips for Guests with Walkers or Wheelchairs

Backyard parties are a great way to bring friends and family together, especially during graduation season, summer holidays, and birthday celebrations. But if you’re hosting guests who use walkers, wheelchairs, or other mobility aids, it’s important to make your space as accessible as possible. A few simple changes can make all the difference in helping everyone feel welcome and safe!

Set Up on a Flat, Stable Surface

Grassy lawns and gravel areas can be difficult for those using wheelchairs or walkers to navigate. If you have a patio or driveway, that’s often the best place to arrange seating and tables. No paved area? Lay down large outdoor rugs, temporary flooring panels, or plywood sheets to create a smoother surface that allows mobility aids to roll more easily.

Clear and Widen Pathways

Make sure there’s plenty of space between tables, chairs, and decorations. Keep walkways at least 36 inches wide so that guests can comfortably maneuver with their mobility devices. Remove any tripping hazards like garden hoses, extension cords, or uneven pavers in high-traffic areas.

Use Supportive Seating

Not everyone will bring their own seating, and flimsy folding chairs can be tricky for seniors or guests with mobility issues. Provide sturdy chairs with backs and armrests, which make it easier for people to sit and stand independently. Position extra seating near entrances, food stations, and shaded areas.

Ensure Bathroom Accessibility

If your guests will be using indoor bathrooms, ensure the path to the house is easy to navigate and has no steps or clutter. If stairs are involved, consider a temporary ramp or safety rail. Renting a portable toilet? Ask for an ADA-compliant unit to ensure it’s large enough for mobility aids.

Create Rest and Shade Zones

Mobility challenges can increase fatigue, especially in warm weather. Set up shaded areas with umbrellas or pop-up canopies, and place seating in quiet spots where guests can relax. Access to water and a fan or misting station is also a nice touch on hot days.

Plan Ahead and Ask About Needs

Reach out to guests in advance to ask if they need accommodations. Planning for accessibility in advance ensures that no one feels left out and helps avoid last-minute scrambling the day of the event.
