Keeping Your Baby Warm This Winter

It is no secret that many of us experience cold winters with dropping temperatures and blowing snow.
As temperatures change, our wardrobe does too. Dressing a baby for winter months can be very stressful and you constantly might find yourself wondering if they are too hot or too cold. These helpful hints will help you dress your baby the best you can for those bitterly cold months.

Layers Matter

By dressing your baby in layers, it can be easier to ensure that your baby is warm enough without overdoing it.  Layering a cotton onesie with a one-piece fleece will help balance their temperature and make it much easier to get them comfortable when they get inside. When you get them inside, you can peel a few of the layers back to adjust to inside temperatures. If they seem to be too cold, you can always add another blanket on. Make sure you keep their mouth and nose clear of blankets if you drape a blanket over them.

Winter Accessories

Accessories for winter are not just fashion statements; they are practical and necessary to keep babies warm. A winter hat is the first thing you should put on your baby before heading outside. The hat should cover both ears and go under the chin to prevent it from falling off. Mittens are also important for babies. Although they may fall off pretty easily, it is worth the effort to try and keep their hands warm. A great way to keep your baby warm is to use the Top of Form

Baby’s Bedtime

Blankets are not safe for babies to sleep with because they can get tangled in them or completely covered by them. For their safety, it is best if you do not put anything in the crib with your baby. Many mothers feel paranoid that their baby is not warm enough, but they are better off being cool than too warm. They will sleep better if they are comfortable but not if they are hot. Check on your baby to make sure they aren’t sweating in bed, and layer just as you would if you were going outside.

Toe Touch

The toes of your baby can be a big indicator of their temperature. By touching the bottom of their toes, you’ll be able to determine if they are too warm or too cold. Their toes should feel on the cooler side and their belly should feel warm. If both the toes and the belly are warm, they are dressed too warm. If the belly is very cool, they are not dressed warm enough.

Car Seat Safety

It is very dangerous for a baby to wear their winter coat or snowsuit while strapped into their car seat. You should take these off of your baby before you strap them in. The harnesses of the car seat will be too loose. If the car is cold, layer some blankets over the cars eat once your baby is buckled in.

The most important thing you can do to keep your baby warm in the winter months is to make sure they are not exposed to subzero temperatures for an extended period of time and to layer their clothing.
